A Hiker's Companion by Karen Berger and Daniel R. Smith Published by Countryman Press, 2000 The Pacific Crest Trail runs through 2,650 miles of the most beautiful landscapes of California, Oregon and Washington. The PCT Hiker's Companion is the book Karen and Dan wanted to read when they thru-hiked the PCT. They wanted a book that would tell them about the land they were walking through -- its history, its natural features, and its environment. And they wanted more information about practical issues like resupplies, seasonal conditions, and gear. So they went to work and wrote the book themselves. The book is divided into 18 chapters, each covering a section of the trail. Detailed information is provided about the High Sierra (snow skills, resupplies, seasonal info) and southern California (dryland hiking skills). For long-distance hikers, they offer a discussion of ultralight fast-packing techniques. For those out for shorter journeys, they recomend "hiking highlights." CONTENTS Each chapter includes: * Trail description. Where the trail goes. What the terrain is like. Information to help you decide which section of trail is right for you. * A "What you'll see" section discusses plants, animals, historic sites, and geographic features. * Hiking information * Seasonal info and gear tips * Thru-hikers' corner * Best short hikes recommendations * Resupplies and trailheads Also: * 23 color photos * More than 100 black-and-white photos * Names and addresses of land management agencies * Suggested reading * Index * 18 maps You can: * Buy this book from Amazon.com. * Ask your local independent bookseller to order and stock this title. * Buy a signed copy from the author (e-mail for info).
